A caregiver is a person in the medical field that helps patients or individuals by taking care of the people who are not able to manage by themselves. They handle children, adults, old people or patients. Individuals need caregivers when they face injuries, disabilities, chronic diseases and other such physically disturbing experiences. Caregivers are the pillars of the society as they support the families and their loved ones emotionally and help them in meeting their needs.

Duties and responsibilities

The main responsibilities of caregivers are to help the patients in their daily activities such as cleaning, bathing, giving medicines, feeding, providing ambulance and others. Arranging activities, medical care, helping in major health decisions, taking the patients to the doctor and others are some of the other responsibilities performed by the caregivers. Caregivers provide assistance to the people for transferring locations. Caregivers help the patients in performing physical and mental activities to meet their activity goals. Caregivers perform an important duty of managing behaviours and redirection of the patients suffering the memory problems. Additionally, checking insulin levels, blood pressure, and other such medical activities are performed by the caregivers. Patients need emotional support due to their physical and mental state issues. Caregivers support the patients emotionally to encourage them to live the life happily.

Contribution of the Caregivers to the society

Caregivers help society by providing the disabled, injured, ill or old age people a support in their daily activities. The people in such condition are difficult to handle and need a trained professional for managing their work. Caregivers help society to carry on their occupations, businesses, routines and personal lives by taking care of their dear ones at home. Caregivers work at hospitals, care agencies, social care centres, hospices, care recipients’ homes and individually.

Challenges in caregiving

Caregivers do not have time-specific jobs. Care recipients may need their help at any hour of the day. Additionally, caregiving can have an adverse impact on the mental and physical health of the caregivers due to lack of sleep, rest and stress.  Caregivers do not have a proper workplace and the location may vary as per the recipients need. Travelling daily is another challenge faced by caregivers.

The rising importance of carer

In recent years, lives have changed completely due to the rising needs of more income sources. People have to step out of their homes to earn for managing their expenses. When people have professional commitments and at the same time they are dealing with patients at home needing care, then at such conditions need for carers arises.

This has created the opportunity for the caregivers. The rising diseases and the lack of resources have increased the scope for the caregivers. Caregivers are important as they provide independence to the family to continue their work while their dear ones are safe with professional carers.

CPPS Certification

CPPS stands for certified professional in Patient Safety that let an individual enhance the professional level of Patient Safety. CPPS sets a benchmark for providing care in Patient Safety levels. Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety CBPPS conducts the exam to evaluate the individuals in the medical field of Patient Safety and test their competency levels. It is an evidence-based examination that evaluates a candidate’s critical thinking abilities, thinking skills, patient safety and attentive skills. It is the best way to set the highest professional level in the Patient Safety field. CPPS examination comprises of five major topics as described below

Culture: Care providers dealing with Patient Safety have to deal with various people that belong to varied cultures. The caregivers have to connect with these patients and their families mentally to make them understand the medical procedures and the current situation of the patients. The caregivers also have to look after the patients and explain the medical procedures. The caregivers need to connect with the people directly. Therefore, understanding and exchanging communication by respecting cultural aspects of the patients and their family is crucial for the caregivers.

Leadership: Leadership is another domain that has been covered in the exam which consists of successfully leading the care recipient. Caregivers know the history and the current situation of the patient therefore at critical times they need to take major decisions for the patients. To make major decisions the caregivers need to be self-confident and have appropriate knowledge of the field critical thinking skills are analysed in the leadership domain as it consists of problem-solving and breaking down the problems into smaller parts so that the most effective solution can be formulated.

Patient Safety risks and solutions: The caregivers are given exhausting training in Patient Safety, medical procedures and risks associated with it. It important for the caregivers to know the risks associated with every medical procedure so that undesired events can be handled carefully and successfully.

Measuring and improving performance: Measuring and improving performance is another domain into the CPPS to which errors are evaluated and measured to gain the level of risk. The caregivers learn from the errors coma set standards for the procedures and also develop indicators for successful implementation of the solutions

System thinking and human factors: System thinking and human factors is another domain covered in the CPPS examination consisting of ethical issues in Patient Safety compliance with the monitoring systems and others. System thinking and human factors are extremely important for the caregivers to provide the best service to the patients.

CPPS exam consists of three main sections of questions. In the Recall section, an individual’s ability to recall the information and details is checked. In the Application section, the ability of the candidates’ of applying their medical knowledge is evaluated whereas, in the Analysis section, an individual’s ability to synthesise information is determined.

CPPS examination is computer-based which can be given at centres as well as through remote proctor. The CPPS exam fees are US $449 for US-based candidates and the international candidates have to pay additional US $100. Candidates have to register for CPPS on the PSI website.
