OET or Occupational English Test is an International English proficiency test owned by CBLA (Cambridge Box hill Language Assessment). OET has been developed specifically to reflect workplace tasks for health professionals who intend to register, work or pursue further training in an English-speaking country. OET is accepted as a proof of a candidate’s clinical communicative skills in a health care setting in countries such as the UK, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, Singapore, Dubai, Ukraine and Namibia. The test involves 4 subtests, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

WHAT IS IT FOR AND WHO CAN TAKE IT?

Unlike other English proficiency tests such as IELTS or PTE, OET is exclusively for health professionals. The test is divided into four parts, including Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking which involves tasks simulating real workplace scenarios and testing relevant language skills for healthcare. There are 12 health professions that are eligible to sit the OET, namely Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Veterinary Science, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Optometry and Dentistry.

WHO RECOGNIZES OET?

OET is recognized by hospitals and universities in the UK, the US, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Singapore as proof of the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively. The scorecard you receive after the test is valid for 2 years.

TYPES OF OET

The Listening and Reading subtests are the same for all the 12 professions. However, the Writing and Speaking modules are rather profession specific. OET can be taken on paper or on a computer at one of the test centers available around your location. OET @ Home allows you to take the test from the comfort of your home. Whichever test you take, the test tasks, format and complexity remain nevertheless the same.

FORMAT OF THE TEST

The OET has four subtests, all of which are conducted on the same day. The Listening tests lasts for about 40 minutes (depending on the length of the audio), followed by the Reading subtest for which you have 15 minutes to finish Part A and 45 minutes to complete Part B and C. Soon after the Reading test, you will have 45 minutes to complete the Writing task which includes 5 minutes reading time and 40 minutes reading time. The Speaking test is conducted on the same day. It is individually delivered and only lasts for about 20 minutes.

LISTENING (Approx. 40 minutes)

Follow and understand a range of health-related spoken materials such as patient consultations and lectures.

READING (60 minutes)

Read and understand different types of text on health-related subjects.

WRITING (45 minutes)

The task is to write a letter of referral, transfer or discharge, or a letter to advise or inform a patient, carer, or group.

SPEAKING (approx. 20 minutes)

There will be two role plays. You take your professional role while the interlocutor plays a patient or client, sometimes a relative or carer.
